Origami meets Technology: 3D Scanning and Digital Creations

As an origami enthusiast, I’ve always been fascinated by the intricate beauty of folded paper art. My designs are not only meant to be visually appealing but are also crafted to serve as unique interior decorations. Each piece is three-dimensional, allowing you to enjoy it from various angles, adding a touch of elegance to any space.

However, due to their characteristics, I found it challenging to fully convey the beauty of my creations through photos and videos alone. Therefore, I decided to experiment with 3D scanning technology to solve this issue. Here are the results of that experiment!

The 3D Scanning Process

To digitize my origami creations, I use an app called WiDER on my iPhone. This powerful tool allows me to capture the fine details of each fold and crease, creating an accurate 3D model of the artwork. The scanning process involves taking multiple photographs from different angles, which the app then stitches together to form a complete 3D model.

What is Photogrammetry?

Photogrammetry is the technique behind this fascinating process. It involves taking numerous photographs of an object from different perspectives and using software to analyze and compile these images into a detailed 3D model. This method is particularly effective for capturing complex shapes and fine details, making it ideal for replicating the intricate designs of origami.

Experimenting with 3D Printing

I’m excited to announce that I’ve started experimenting with 3D printing, converting my scanned models into tangible items. The 3D data is saved in OBJ format, which is widely compatible with most 3D printers. As a trial, I’ve listed a limited selection of 10 digital files on my shop page. These files are perfect for those who own a 3D printer and want to try printing their own origami sculptures.

By purchasing these files, not only do you get a chance to create your own 3D-printed origami art, but you also support my ongoing work and passion for blending traditional art with modern technology. I hope that these digital creations will bring as much joy to you as the original paper versions do.

Thank you for joining me on this creative journey. Your support means the world to me, and I can’t wait to see how you bring these 3D-printed origami pieces to life in your own unique way!
